Kingdom of Gleann Abhann, Shire of Troll Fen

Combat in the style of the Middle Ages is a significant component of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Most of the following activities involve facing one or more opponents in a safe simulation of medieval combat. Fighting is open to men and women, boys and girls. There is no fee for instruction and practice equipment is available.
Armored Combat
The sword was the queen of the battlefield from the beginnings of metalworking until the use of gunpowder spread across Europe. Armored knights and men-at-arms met in single combat to resolve points of honor or justice, and massed armies clashed to settle the disputes of nations. Armored combat with sword and shield, spear and axe, are a major activity in the SCA. Single combat, tournaments, and mass melees highlight many events. Troll Fen's fighter practices are held Sundays in Girard Park, Lafayette, at about 3:00. Spectators and new fighters are always welcome.
Rapier
Towards the end of the Middle Ages, changes in society and technology often made it necessary for civilians to carry swords. Thus was born the rapier, a long narrow sword which emphasized the use of the point against an unarmored opponent. The Shire of Troll Fen has a small but avid group of Rapier fencers. Practices are Sundays at about 3:00 in Girard Park in Lafayette. Beginners are most welcome.
Combat Archery and Seige Weapons
One of the ways in which medieval combat is recreated in the SCA is with the use of bows and crossbows, and catapults, trebuchets and other seige engines. Armor and specially constructed ammunition allow the safe use of these weapons in SCA battles, adding another tactical element to armored combat between armies equipped with swords and spears.
Youth Combat
Troll Fen hosts two Youth Combat programs, open to boys and girls alike. For armored combat, fighters from seven to seventeen years old can train and compete within their age brackets using equipment designed to safely simulate swordplay. Rapier training is available to aspiring fencers aged fourteen and up.
Supervised instruction is available during our regular fighter practices, Sundays in Girard Park in Lafayette, beginning around 3:00.
Live Weapons
Skill with edged weapons is practiced and demonstrated on inanimate targets, including axe, spear and knife throwing as well as field archery.
